Sie nannten ihn Spencer XXL (2019)
They Called Him Spencer is the first cinema documentary with and about Bud Spencer, focusing on Carlo Pedersoli’s multifaceted biography as well as the world-spanning phenomenon of the Spencer/Hill cult films. Carlo Pedersoli, better known as Bud Spencer, sums up his life motto with “Futtetenne” (Fuck it). The multi-talented actor is characterized by the mentality of having the courage to realize dreams and enjoy life to the fullest. Spurred on by the films’ message, the two fans Jorgo from Berlin and Marcus from Augsburg set off on an adventurous road trip to get closer to their idol. Their journey turns into a scavenger hunt across Europe. Along the way, they meet numerous acting colleagues and companions of Bud Spencer. In between, clips from the Bud Spencer films are shown. Through the two fan protagonists, the viewer learns not only how the cult of Bud Spencer and Terence Hill is lived, but why the “fat man with the steam hammer” still inspires millions of fans around the world. The film is narrated by the legendary German dubbing voice of Terence Hill, Thomas Danneberg, who can’t resist making vicious comments or saying stupid things in the typical “Schnodderdeutsch” written by Rainer Brandt. Sie nannten ihn Spencer is the last joint feature film by Bud Spencer and Terence Hill.
